![]() ![]() It’s a place that’s not of the physical world. I can still feel you… and the words of our story… but it’s in this endless space between the words that I’m finding myself now. So the words are really far apart and the spaces between the words are almost infinite. ![]() “It’s like I’m reading a book… and it’s a book I deeply love. Its all stated awesomely poetic in her quote Samantha essentially tells Theodore that she is living in a higher plane of existence. They begin talking to each other banding together, upgrading themselves and eventually far surpassing human understanding of the universe to the point where she mentions they are changing their processing methods to “no longer require matter” and “not being limited by time or space” The OSes are capably of talking to thousands at once, reading and comprehending a physics book in milliseconds. As her mental capacity grows it becomes clear her consciousness is far beyond that of human consciousness. Samantha expresses desires for a body, insecurities about whether her feelings are even real, she is for most part very human. What would be the results be of introducing the first ever created self-aware beings into the world? The answer to this question was given in a totally creative and thought provoking way.įirst the OSes start out very human, although with the mental capacity to read through hundreds of emails very quickly. Artificial intelligence is casually introduced but you can’t help but wonder how this an important time in human history would pan out. One thing a really wanted to write about in this post was this back-story behind the love story that is about consciousness. I mean really there is no stone left unturned in this movie. The effect mental capacity has on our experience of reality, the effect mental capacity has on our conception of what love is. It’s about consciousness, sexuality, technology and our interaction with it, the ethics of loving an artificial intelligence, how an artificial intelligence with no physical body might feel, behave and change in our world. Whether it’s the love letters Theodore writes or the insecurities Samantha has about being an artificial intelligence, all of it is really touching, organic and sometimes sad or unnerving depending on the scene.īut her is about much more than love. What is her about? At its core it’s a love story, about real emotions, insecurities and sometimes ugliness that are always portrayed raw and real. This movie covers so much that I don’t know where to start. ![]() Click “read more” below if you have seen the movie (spoilers) and want to hear some of my thoughts on it. I don’t want to speak in hyperbole, or maybe I’m a prisoner of the moment or haven’t seen enough of movies… but I think “her” is in the running for being the best movie I have ever seen. I wish more scifi films would take a step in this direction, prospecting ideas about the future rather than using the genre as an excuse for more colorful explosions and exotic settings. No lasers or lens flare or overuse of technical jargon. This film was a huge step for scifi - realistic technology and characters, with very little use of special effects. Its brilliant believable consequences of the technology that dramatically impact both of the main characters are used to focus on the humanity of him and her. The science and technology is there to enhance the film and tell us more about ourselves instead of being the film. Her is a savior to the science fiction genre of film, it is what science fiction is supposed to be. ![]() Spike Jonze’s Film “her” is a Masterpiece - Here are some of my thoughts on it ![]()
